SHREE MALLIKARJUN & Shri Chetan Manju Desai College was established in the year 1993 by the Dnyan Prabodhini Mandal, for the educational upliftment of the students from the taluka of Canacona. Since Goa’s liberation in 1961, and until 1993 there was no opportunity for higher in the taluka. Realizing this acute need a group of self-made, common yet spirited citizens established the college to serve the cause of education, particularly the marginalized section of society. 

The College is permanently affiliated with Goa University and is govt-aided with 2(f) and 12(B) recognition of the UGC. The college is close to the Goa-Karnataka boundary, amidst Sahyadri ghats and is close to the world-famous beaches of the State. The College campus is located in part having regions inhabited by the ST communities and underprivileged families. Presently, 80% of our students are from such communities.
During the first cycle of College NAAC accreditation, it was accredited with 2.81 points in 2015. In the last 5 years, the college has brought about a revolutionary change in the region’s educational scenario, diversified in leaps and bounds, and has carved a niche for itself as a celebrated seat of learning. The college today has become a preferred destination for students in the taluka not by chance, but by choice. 

During the last 5 years, our college strength has gone up from an average of 300-350 to around 600. College added BSc (Hons) program in Chemistry while the total staff strength increased as well. College added recognized Research Centre’s in the subject of Geography and Commerce and offers as many as 19 UG programs under the CBCS mode. The infrastructure was tremendously augmented, while the college’s reputation and perception underwent considerable change.
The College benefits by Rs. 2 crores under the RUSA scheme, and has consistently ranked among the top 150 colleges in the country for its quality as per the India Today Ranking and the Rankings by Education World. The college in the year 2022 was recognized as among the Best Brands of Goa, and awarded by Lions Club for its outstanding Extension Activities.
